The Whole Armour of God

Ephesians 6 KJV

Ephesians 6:10-18 (KJV):

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

Each piece explained

• Loins girt about with truth (v. 14a) — the soldier’s belt held every other piece together. Truth — the truth of God’s Word — is the belt that gives shape to everything else.
• Breastplate of righteousness (v. 14b) — the covering that guards the heart. Christ’s righteousness given to us, and worked out in a righteous life.
• Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace (v. 15) — the sandals that let a soldier move. The gospel of peace is what the Christian carries into every step.
• Shield of faith (v. 16) — the great door-shaped shield that quenches the enemy’s fiery darts. Faith in the living God.
• Helmet of salvation (v. 17a) — the covering of the mind. Salvation known and trusted keeps the head clear in battle.
• Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (v. 17b) — the only offensive weapon in the list. The KJV in a Christian’s hand and heart.
• Praying always with all prayer… in the Spirit (v. 18) — the armour is worn in the atmosphere of prayer. Without prayer the armour hangs on a hook.

Family application

A Christian household is under attack. Not from the neighbours — the attack is spiritual (v. 12). The armour is not optional. It is the daily dress of every believer old and young.

Teach children the six pieces by name. Ask them each night: Did you carry the truth today? Did you use the shield of faith? Older children can be given a personal verse for each piece.

Notice: every piece is defensive except the Sword. The Christian’s only offensive weapon is Scripture. Which is why the KJV is on the household’s table.

Prayer

A short household prayer from Ephesians 6:

Lord God of hosts, gird our loins with thy truth; cover our hearts with the righteousness of thy Son; shoe our feet with the peace of the gospel; give us the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked; place the helmet of salvation upon our heads; put the sword of thy Spirit, thy Word, in our hands; and keep us in the Spirit of prayer, watching for all the saints. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
