Eve

Identity

Eve is the first woman; wife of Adam; the mother of Cain, Abel, Seth, and — as Scripture says — 'the mother of all living' (Genesis 3:20). The promise that her seed would bruise the serpent's head (Genesis 3:15) is the first Gospel: through the woman's line, the Rescuer would come.

Name and titles

'Eve' — Chavvah in Hebrew — is given by Adam and means 'living' or 'life-giver' (Genesis 3:20: 'because she was the mother of all living'). Christian tradition (Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and after) calls Mary 'the New Eve' — the woman whose 'yes' undoes the first woman's 'no.'

• At creation — Formed by God from Adam's side (Genesis 2:21-23).
• In the garden — Named 'Woman' by Adam (Genesis 2:23).
• The Fall — Deceived by the serpent; eats of the forbidden tree; gives to Adam (Genesis 3:1-6).
• Immediately after — '…he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel' — the promise concerning her seed (Genesis 3:15).
• After Eden — Bore Cain, then Abel, then Seth (Genesis 4:1-2, 25).

Household reflection

Eve teaches the household that even the deepest failure is met immediately by the first promise of grace. Before God even judged the serpent fully, He named the coming Rescuer. Mercy runs ahead of judgment.

Every mother in the house who has said 'yes' to bearing children stands in a line that runs from Eve to Mary — a line God Himself blesses.
