Proverbs 3:1-12 (KJV):

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Chapter overview

Proverbs 3 is a father’s counsel to his son, structured around three great household themes:

• Verses 1-12 — Trust the LORD (the most-memorized verses of Proverbs are here).
• Verses 13-20 — The praise of Wisdom — happy is the man that findeth wisdom; she is a tree of life.
• Verses 21-35 — The neighbour: withhold not good from them to whom it is due; devise not evil against thy neighbour; envy not the oppressor.

Key lessons

• Verse 5-6 is the golden verse. Trust with all thine heart; lean not on thine own; acknowledge him in all thy ways; he shall direct thy paths. Every Christian family should know it by heart in the KJV.
• Honour the LORD with thy substance (v. 9). The household’s wallet is under the same LORD as its heart.
• Chastening is love (vv. 11-12). The Father corrects the son whom he loves; Hebrews 12:5-11 quotes this verse.
• Wisdom is a tree of life (v. 18). The image echoes Eden and points to the cross.
• Withhold not good from them to whom it is due (v. 27). Neighbour-love is baked into wisdom.

Family discussion

Around the table this week, ask:

• What is one thing our household is trusting our own understanding about, rather than trusting the LORD?
• What does it look like to acknowledge him in all thy ways?
• What is the difference between his chastening and his rejection?

Memorize verses 5-6 with children early; it is one of the great Christian household verses.

Reflection

Proverbs 3:5-6 is the household’s emergency verse. When the way forward is unclear, when the household has to decide, when a member of the family is anxious, this is the verse the Christian returns to.

“Lean not unto thine own understanding” is the hard clause. The Christian is not asked to have no understanding; the Christian is asked to not lean on it. Our understanding is real; it just cannot bear our full weight. Only the LORD can.

Prayer

LORD our God, teach our household to trust thee with all our hearts, and not to lean upon our own understanding. In all our ways may we acknowledge thee, and thou hast promised to direct our paths. Chasten us in love, and let us not be weary of thy correction. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
