Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it the elders obtained a good report.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear…
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him…
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth…
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets…
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Chapter overview
Hebrews 11 is the Bible’s single greatest anthem of faith. The Preacher (the anonymous author of Hebrews) walks the whole Old Testament in one sweep, naming saint after saint whose story is a story of trust in an unseen God.
- Vv. 1-3 — the definition of faith.
- Vv. 4-7 — Abel, Enoch, Noah — the antediluvian faithful.
- Vv. 8-22 — the patriarchs: Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph.
- Vv. 23-29 — Moses and the Exodus.
- Vv. 30-31 — Joshua and Rahab.
- Vv. 32-38 — the judges, David, Samuel, the prophets, the martyrs.
- Vv. 39-40 — and God has provided some better thing for us.

Key lessons
- Faith is substance and evidence (v. 1). It is real. It is what the Christian stands on.
- Without faith it is impossible to please God (v. 6). The Christian pleases God by trusting him, not by earning him.
- They saw the promises afar off (v. 13). Faith often does not see fulfillment in this life. It sees the promises afar and greets them.
- God has provided some better thing for us (v. 40). We stand in a longer story than they did. Christ has come.
Family discussion
Read the whole chapter aloud together at least once a season. Every family in the Bible is here. Every OT hero the household knows appears in one anthem.
Ask the children:
- What did Noah do by faith? What did Abraham do by faith?
- What is one thing our household is doing this year by faith?
Reflection
Hebrews 11 is the Church’s memory book. The Preacher writes it so that a Christian on hard days can look up from his own difficulty and see a cloud of witnesses standing behind him — and then, in chapter 12:1-2, the writer says: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight… looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.
Faith always ends by looking at the Lord Jesus.
Prayer
God of Abel and Enoch and Noah, God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Moses and Joshua, God of the prophets and the martyrs — give us the faith of thy cloud of witnesses. Let us also, in our small day and in this small household, lay aside every weight, and run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Amen.
