Noah

Identity

Noah is the tenth descendant from Adam through Seth, the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and the man through whom God preserved humanity and every kind of animal through the flood. Scripture calls him 'a just man and perfect in his generations' who 'walked with God' (Genesis 6:9). Peter reads the ark as a type of Christian baptism (1 Peter 3:20-21).

Name and titles

'Noah' — Noach in Hebrew — means 'rest' or 'comfort.' Lamech named him saying, 'This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed' (Genesis 5:29). Called by Peter 'a preacher of righteousness' (2 Peter 2:5).

• Traditional dating — Some Christian traditions place Noah c. 2500-2200 BC (using biblical genealogies); other traditions read the numbers symbolically. Both readings are within Christian tradition.
