Mount Ararat

Location

'The mountains of Ararat' (Genesis 8:4) is a mountainous region of eastern Anatolia (modern eastern Turkey) north of the Tigris headwaters. Its highest peak — Mount Ararat itself (Turkish Ağrı Dağı) — rises to about 16,854 feet, one of the great isolated volcanic peaks of the region. Scripture speaks of 'the mountains of Ararat' in the plural; Christian tradition has focused on the Ağrı Dağı peak from at least the fourth century.

Biblical importance

Mount Ararat is named as the resting place of the ark: 'And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat' (Genesis 8:4). It is the anchor for the whole flood narrative and the first specific geographical location named after the Garden of Eden in the biblical story. It is where the world of Noah began again.
