The House on the Rock

Hymn of the week · a household companion.

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” — Matthew 7:24–25 (KJV)

What the hymn is about

The Lord ends the Sermon on the Mount with two houses. Both hear the words; only one house does them. The hymn The House on the Rock takes that image and keeps it near the household: a house is not the walls, it is the foundation. When the rain comes — and the rain always comes — the doing of the Word is what holds.
