The Story Behind the Hymn

Matthew 7 ends the Sermon on the Mount with a picture of two builders. Both build houses; both meet storms. The difference is not the storm — the difference is the foundation. This contemporary praise hymn puts that image into a household voice: the Rock is Christ, and the household that builds on him stands.

There is a house that will not fall,

Founded on a Rock that will not move;

The rain came down, the floods rose up,

And the house still stood, and was seen to prove.

There is a Rock we build upon,

His name is Jesus, the Word made known;

Every word we hear from him and keep

Reflection

Christian obedience is masonry. Every time the household hears the Word of Christ and does it, another stone is laid on the foundation. Storms will come — Christ himself said so — but a household founded on him will not be broken, because the foundation was never negotiable, only more visible when the storm arrived.

A Prayer on the Rock

Lord Jesus, thou art the Rock. Let this household build upon thee every day, hearing thy Word and doing it. Do not let us build on shifting sand. When storms come, may they only prove that we are founded on the unmoved Christ. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
