The Story Behind the Hymn

This hymn stands at the beginning of every other hymn in the house — it names the One by whom every other song is sung. Before the mountain or the sea or the morning was, the Word already was. Before the household had a house, the Word had a Father. John opens his Gospel with a sentence that carries the whole weight of creation, incarnation, and salvation — the Word was, the Word was with God, the Word was God. This hymn sings that sentence into the corners of a family room.

Before the sun had rose to speak the morning,

Before the stars had learned the names they hold,

There the Word was, with the Father dwelling,

Older than the ages, deeper than the fold.

Word before the world, and Word within it,

Word that made the mountain, made the sea,

Word that took our flesh and dwelt among us,

Word that is, and was, and yet shall be.

Word of light in every night we walk;

Word before the world shall be its ending,

Word that made the manger and the tree,

Keep our households in thy speaking, Lord,

Reflection

If the Word made the world, then every ordinary thing in the house — the table, the light, the child's small voice — has a history that goes back to before the sun. When the household sings this hymn, it is thanking the Word for making the world the household lives in, and asking the same Word to keep speaking inside the walls. The Word did not go quiet after Genesis. He is still speaking. Sometimes the speaking sounds like Scripture read at breakfast. Sometimes it sounds like a child asking a question no one taught them to ask.

A Prayer for the Speaking Hour

O Word before the world, keep this house in thy speaking. When our own words fail — and they will fail — speak thou over us. When the children grow older than the songs we know, teach them the older song thou didst sing before the world began. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Morning Before the day begins

Read John 1:1-3 aloud before breakfast. Then let one voice sing the first verse and the others answer with the second. The Word that made the morning will make the morning bright.

Evening As the house grows quiet

As the house grows quiet, sing the Bridge and let the last line — Speak, and stone begins to talk — become a prayer for any heart in the house that has grown hard.

Ask the children: 'What did the Word make?' Let them answer as they walk through the house pointing at things. The mountain. The sea. Us. Sing Verse 2 together.
