The story
Long ago, on the island of Sicily, there was a young girl named Lucy. Her name means light.
In her town, there were people who were hungry, and people hiding in dark places because it was dangerous to be a Christian at that time. Every night, Lucy would take bread and cheese and warm bowls of soup to the people who had none.
But the tunnels where they hid were dark. Lucy needed both her hands for the food. So she made a crown, and put candles on it, and lit them, and wore them upon her head. That way, the light went before her and her hands were free to carry help.
People who saw her said her face looked like sunrise coming through a doorway.
Lucy loved Jesus with her whole small life. And she was not ashamed. Even when it cost her everything, she would not stop lighting the way for the frightened and feeding the hungry.
Now, in some Christian houses on Lucy's day, a young daughter still wears a crown of candles, brings sweet bread to the family, and reminds everyone: Christ is the true light. And the smallest child can carry a little of that light into a dark room.
