The Story Behind the Hymn

This is the last hymn any Christian will need to sing. It quotes the last words of the last book of the Bible: He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Every household that sings this hymn is stepping into that ancient answer — the answer of the whole Church watching the eastern gate, waiting for the King who has already been crowned in glory.

Behold, he cometh — hear the trumpet sound,

Behold, he cometh with a thousand kings;

The King who bore the crown of thorn is crowned,

And every valley learns the song he brings.

We have not seen him yet with waking eyes,

But every dawn we watch the eastern gate;

The Lamb who loved us waits behind the skies,

And every household of the faithful — wait.

Then let this household stand as those who long,

Reflection

The Christian household lives between two comings — one already happened at Bethlehem, one still ahead at the trumpet. This hymn gathers the whole household into the second — into the joyful restlessness of the whole Church that has been saying 'Even so, come' for two thousand years. He will come. The doors will open. The trumpet will split the air. And every household that watched will find that its watching was itself a form of worship.

A Prayer for the Watching Hour

Lord Jesus, we watch for thee. Keep our doors ready and our lamps burning. When the trumpet sounds, may this household be found singing thee home. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Morning Before the day begins

Read Revelation 22:20 aloud with the first cup. Sing Verse 1. Say to the household: he is coming. Then let the day begin.

Evening As the house grows quiet

As the house grows quiet, sing the Bridge slowly. Repeat 'Even so, come, Lord Jesus' three times. Let it be a benediction over the whole house's sleep.

With Children Simple enough for little ears

Show the children a lit lamp. Read Matthew 25:6 — 'Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.' Sing Verse 3 together and let them keep the lamp near their beds.
