Christian growth is often measured in what expands — knowledge, gifts, influence. This hymn measures growth by what diminishes. John the Baptist knew joy not by adding to his own reputation but by making sure the Bridegroom's voice was the one heard. The Bridge repeats his sentence not as loss but as the door of peace: 'He must increase, and my heart find peace in the shadow of his majesty.' A household that learns to hide inside the shadow of Christ's glory has room for every other person in the room.
Lord Jesus, thou art the Bridegroom of every faithful heart. Grow in us until there is nothing left in us that does not point to thee. Diminish our loud parts. Let the friend of the Bridegroom in our house be the loudest voice, and let that voice always be rejoicing over thee. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
