The Story Behind the Hymn
This hymn sings a single sentence from the last public witness of John the Baptist. When his disciples came anxious that Jesus was drawing crowds larger than his own, John answered with the freest words a servant ever spoke — He must increase, but I must decrease. The household that sings this hymn is asking to be given that same freedom: to grow small in name and rejoice at every crown that goes to the Bridegroom.
