The Story Behind the Hymn

The 23rd Psalm is the hymn every household eventually needs. This hymn takes the single sentence — He restoreth my soul — and lets the Shepherd sing it back over the noise of the week. When the miles have worn the peace away, the Shepherd leads to a green-still place. When the years have bruised what was tender, the Shepherd restores. This is not a hymn for the strong. When the noise has grown too loud within my chest,

When the many miles have worn the peace away,

Come, O Shepherd, lead me to a green-still place,

Where thy voice returns and teaches me to stay.

He restoreth what the anxious years have bruised,

He restoreth what the wandering days have lost;

Every fractured hour is gathered in his hand,

And the tender Shepherd counts and pays the cost.

Reflection

Restoration is not repair. Repair patches what broke. Restoration gives back what was lost. The Shepherd of Psalm 23 does not rebuild the soul; He returns it. He gathers the fractured hours into his hand and counts them, and where the count comes short, he pays the cost. The household that sings this hymn is not asking for strength; it is asking to be led back to itself, and through itself back to God.

A Prayer of the Weary Household

Good Shepherd, restore this household. Where we are loud, quiet us. Where we are worn, renew us. Where we have wandered, lead us home for thy name's sake. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Read Psalm 23 aloud before breakfast. Sing Verse 1. Let each person name one restoration they are asking the Shepherd for today.

Evening As the house grows quiet

Sing the Bridge slowly. Let 'Lead me for thy holy name' be the last line before the house rests.
