The Story Behind the Hymn

This is a hymn for every morning the household must begin again. Paul wrote to a church whose worst moments were still fresh in their memory that if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature — old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new. The hymn sings that promise into the sunlight coming through the kitchen window: the dust of yesterday is swept, the burdens we let fall are washed, and the household walks the day as a new creation.

The old man walks no longer through this door,

The dust of yesterday is swept away,

He that is in Christ is made once more,

And morning finds us new for every day.

Behold, all things — the water and the bread,

The names we bear, the burdens we let fall —

Are washed and rising as the dawn is spread,

And Christ the Maker maketh new them all.

Old griefs, old shames pass through,

Made new before his throne.

Then let this household waken in the light,

That every morning is a Genesis,

And every sunrise on our walls is white

With mercy that is new for what we miss.

Reflection

The morning is not a resetting; it is a resurrection in miniature. The old man does not slowly get better in Christ — he is put off, and a new one is put on. What the household has to do each morning is not manufacture freshness but receive it. This hymn is an invitation to walk into every sunrise as evidence, not effort — the evidence that mercy is new because Christ has made all things new.

A Prayer for the New Morning

Lord of every morning, our old man is dead in thy death and our new man alive in thy resurrection. Meet this household in the light. Wash the burdens we let fall. Give us Genesis eyes for the ordinary day. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Morning Before the day begins

Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 aloud with the first cup. Sing Verse 1. Ask the household: what old thing can we let be dust today?

Evening As the house grows quiet

Sing the Bridge before sleep. Let 'Made new before his throne' be the last line before the house grows quiet.

With Children Simple enough for little ears

Ask the children: what does new mean? Then read Revelation 21:5 — 'Behold, I make all things new.' Sing Verse 3 slowly enough that each morning after this one will feel like a Genesis.
