John 14 is Christ's farewell to the household of his disciples the night before he was taken. In the middle of that long conversation, he gives them a gift no other teacher ever left behind: not a book, not a rule, but a peace. Not the peace the world sells — a fragile quiet built on distraction — but a peace that was already his own, brought back from the far side of the grave he was about to enter.

The Christian household does not manufacture its own peace. We receive it. Christ does not say, be still and I will help you become calm. He says, Peace I leave with you — my peace I give unto you. The verb is settled; the gift is already handed over. Our task at night is not to build peace but to breathe in what he has already exhaled over us.
Lord Jesus, thou hast promised a peace the world cannot give and cannot take. Let this household lie down tonight in that peace, and rise tomorrow still inside it. Keep our hearts from being troubled, and hush every fear that presses in. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
