Committed to His Hand

“Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.” Psalm 31:5 · KJV

The Story Behind the Hymn

Psalm 31:5 gives the household the line the Lord Jesus himself would later quote from the cross: Into thine hand I commit my spirit. It is the most trusting sentence any tired heart has ever prayed — the surrender of what we cannot hold into hands we cannot see, and yet have proved themselves faithful in every generation before us.

0:00 / 0:00
Into thy hand, O Lord, I now commit
The trembling of a day I cannot hold;
The wisdom mine has neither strength nor wit,
But thy quiet keeping is the surer fold.
Thou hast redeemed me from a debt too great,
Paid in blood no shining coin could weigh;
And now I lay my small unfinished self
Into thine hand, O God of truth, today.
Into thy hand,
Into thy quiet keeping,
Into thy hand,
Where love is never sleeping.
Then let this household lay itself in trust,
The morning and the evening and the night;
Into thy hand our loved and lost we give,
And find them held forever in thy light.
Thou hast redeemed me from a debt too great,
Paid in blood no shining coin could weigh;
And now I lay my small unfinished self
Into thine hand, O God of truth, today.
Into thy hand,
Into thy quiet keeping,
Into thy hand,
Where love is never sleeping.
Then let this household lay itself in trust,
The morning and the evening and the night;
Into thy hand our loved and lost we give,
And find them held forever in thy light.

Reflection

Committing is not resigning. To commit into the Father's hand is not to give up on the day but to place the day into stronger keeping. The hymn asks the household to loosen its grip on what cannot be held tightly anyway — the trembling hours, the unfinished selves, the loved and lost — and to trust the hand that has redeemed them with a blood no shining coin could weigh.

A Prayer of Committing

O God of truth, into thy hand we commit this household. The morning and the evening and the night; the loved and the lost; the trembling and the small — receive them, and keep them, and love them. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Use This Hymn At Home

Morning Before the day begins

Read Psalm 31:5 aloud before breakfast. Sing Verse 1. Each household member names one thing they wish to commit into the Father's hand today.

Evening As the house grows quiet

Sing the Bridge slowly as the last thing before sleep. Let 'Where love is never sleeping' be the last line the house hears.

With Children Simple enough for little ears

Show the children how to open and close their hand. Read the verse. Ask them: what will you give to the Father today? Sing Verse 3 and let them fold their own hand as they sing.
