Luke 1 gives us one of the boldest songs in scripture — the Magnificat, sung by a young woman who has just been told she will bear the Messiah. She does not sing about herself. She sings about a God who topples proud princes and lifts the humble in the same breath. This female-ensemble hymn borrows her line and lets a household sing behind her.

The Magnificat is a household song. Mary sings it inside a cousin's home, in ordinary domestic light, without a temple or choir. Every Christian household lives in that same domestic light. We too can sing that God has regarded the small, that mercy runs from generation to generation, and that the mighty and the humble are not weighed the way this world weighs them.
O Lord, thou hast lifted the low and filled the hungry with good things. Teach this household to sing after Mary — to magnify thee, not ourselves; to see thy mercy running to every generation under this roof. Let the song of the handmaid become the song of our home. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
