The Story Behind the Hymn

James 4:8 is the shortest household invitation in the New Testament: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. This Celtic hymn takes that promise and imagines what it looks like when the Lord comes near — mountains bowing, rivers stilling, the small household grown suddenly quiet under a great presence.

Verse 1

When the Lord comes near, the mountains bow low,

And the rivers grow still and the valleys are shown;

When the Lord comes near, the household grows quiet,

And the smallest of hearts learns the greatness of home.

When the Lord comes near, the door of the sanctuary

Swings open on hinges that never grow rust;

The Lamp that was set for the household in Bethel

Is set once again for the household of trust.

Reflection

The Christian household is not a place we build to be seen; it is a place we build to be visited. The whole discipline of prayer, of scripture, of common meal is nothing more than the arranging of the household to make room for the guest who was already coming near. When we draw nigh, he was already there. That is the promise, and the Celtic saints knew it well.

A Prayer of Drawing Near

Lord God, teach this household to draw near to thee morning and evening. When our attention scatters, gather us again. When the world is loud, hush our hearts to hear thy footstep. Come near, Lord — as thou didst come near in gardens, in upper rooms, on roads to Emmaus. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
