The Lion of Judah

“Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” Revelation 5:5 · KJV

The Story Behind the Hymn

Revelation 5 gives the household its first look at the throne room of heaven. An elder tells John: Weep not — the Lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed. Then John turns and sees not a Lion but a Lamb, as it had been slain. The Christ we sing to is both. This cinematic hymn takes that double image and sets it under orchestra strings and timpani.

Scripture Anchor

“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne...stood a Lamb as it had been slain...And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood.” Revelation 5:5-9 · KJV

Companion passages: Genesis 49:9-10 ("Judah is a lion's whelp") · Isaiah 53:7 ("as a lamb to the slaughter") · John 1:29 ("Behold the Lamb of God") · Revelation 7:9-10 ("Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb").

Weep no more, the Lion is come,
The Lion of the tribe of Judah;
He hath prevailed to open the seals,
The Lamb who is worthy is our All.
Ten thousand thousand round the throne,
Sing worthy is the Lamb once slain;
Blessing and honour, glory and power,
Forever be his to the highest name.
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lamb,
Lion of Judah, Root of David;
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lamb,
And the household bows to the King who saved us.
So let this household lift its knee,
Bow at the throne where Christ hath sat;
The Lamb who died shall reign in glory,
And the household shall reign forever with that.
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lamb,
Lion of Judah, Root of David;
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lamb,
And the household bows to the King who saved us.

Reflection

The Christian household worships a Lion who is a Lamb — the roaring King who was also the sacrificed Servant. This is the heart of the gospel: strength poured out as mercy, sovereignty that saves by dying. When our household bows, we bow to no ordinary king. We bow to the Lamb who is the Lion.

A Prayer at the Throne of the Lamb

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain. Worthy is the Lion of Judah. This household bows before thee, O Christ. Blessing and honour and glory and power be to thee for ever. Reign in this house as thou dost reign in heaven. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
