Hebrews 6:19 gives the household a single, weight-bearing image: hope as an anchor. Not a comfort, not a hint, not a mood — an anchor cast into the sea whose depths no storm can shift. And the anchor holds because the veil that once kept us from the Holy Place has been rent, and the Priest has gone within, bearing his own blood. Christian hope is not optimism. Optimism trusts circumstances to improve; hope trusts a Priest who has already entered the Holiest Place on our behalf. When storms come, and they will, the household that has cast its hope through the veil is not drifting — it is held. The face beyond the day is already waiting. This hymn asks that the household grow bold enough to reach for what is already ours in Christ.
Great High Priest, thou hast gone within the veil for us. Anchor this household to thy sure and stedfast hope. When our storms rise, let us not look for the shore but hold the anchor thou hast set. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
