What it is
The Gospel according to Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. It was written by Matthew — one of the twelve apostles, the former tax-collector Jesus called from the toll-booth — probably in the late 50s or 60s AD, for a mainly Jewish audience. Its aim is to show that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised King of Israel, the Son of David, the fulfilment of the whole Old Testament.The shape
Matthew's Gospel is built around five great teaching sections — many scholars think this is deliberate, echoing the five books of Moses:1. The Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5–7)
2. The Missionary Discourse (chapter 10)
3. The Parables of the Kingdom (chapter 13)
4. The Discourse on the Church (chapter 18)
5. The Olivet Discourse on the end (chapters 24–25)
Around these five sermons is woven the story: birth (1–2), baptism and temptation (3–4), miracles and confrontations, and finally the passion, death, and resurrection (26–28).
