The story
Elisha was ploughing in a field with twelve yoke of oxen when Elijah found him. Elijah threw his mantle over him. Elisha killed the oxen, boiled the meat over the wooden yokes, gave the food to his workers, kissed his father and mother goodbye, and followed the prophet without looking back.For years Elisha served Elijah. When the day came for Elijah to be taken up to heaven, Elisha would not leave his side. From Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho to the Jordan they walked. Elijah struck the river with his mantle; the water parted; they crossed on dry ground. Elijah asked, "What shall I do for thee?" Elisha answered, "I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me."
Then the chariot of fire came. Elijah went up in a whirlwind. Elisha picked up the mantle that fell from him, struck the Jordan, and crossed back — a new prophet for Israel.
For over half a century Elisha served. He healed the poisoned spring at Jericho. He multiplied a widow's oil so she could pay her debts. He raised a Shunammite boy from the dead. He purified a pot of poisoned stew. He fed a hundred men with twenty loaves. He healed the leprosy of the Syrian general Naaman by sending him to wash in the Jordan seven times. He made an iron ax-head float. He struck a whole Syrian army blind and led them into Samaria.
