The story
Martha is one of three siblings in the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem: Martha, her sister Mary, and their brother Lazarus. All three love Jesus, and Jesus loves them (John 11:5). Their home is one of the few places in Scripture where Jesus is said to rest.In Luke 10:38–42 Martha welcomes Jesus into her house. She is "cumbered about much serving" — the practical sister making sure the meal is prepared. She complains that Mary is sitting at Jesus's feet listening and not helping. Jesus answers gently: "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful."
In John 11 her brother Lazarus falls sick. Martha and Mary send for Jesus. Jesus delays. Lazarus dies. When Jesus finally arrives, Martha is the one who goes out to meet him. She says, "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died." Jesus tells her, "I am the resurrection, and the life… believest thou this?" And Martha — the busy, practical sister — gives one of the greatest confessions in the New Testament: "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world." A moment later Jesus raises Lazarus from the tomb.
Martha appears one more time (John 12:2) — again serving supper, this time for Jesus in the week before the crucifixion. She is still, quietly, doing what she does: making room in her house for the Lord.
