A gentle evening flow for the household
A six-movement evening prayer for the Christian household — short enough to keep, deep enough to matter. Each movement offers two or three KJV Scriptures. Choose one from each. When the day has been heavy, one movement is a whole prayer, and the household can go to sleep.
Step 1 · Opening
The lifting of hands at evening
Set aside the day. Take one slow breath. Say the opening verse aloud, and let the room fall quiet.
“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”
Psalm 141:2 · KJV“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8 · KJV“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”
Psalm 55:17 · KJV
Step 2 · Thanksgiving
The day's mercies
Name three mercies of the day. Small ones count — a kind word, safe travel, an unexpected help. Then say the verse.
“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”
Lamentations 3:22 · KJV“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 · KJV“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Psalm 107:1 · KJV
Step 3 · Confession
Do not carry it into the night
Name what the day taught you about yourself. Confess it — silent or spoken. Then trust the promise. Do not carry it into the night.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 · KJV“Let not the sun go down upon your wrath.”
Ephesians 4:26 · KJV“Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:2 · KJV
Step 4 · Petition
The household and the neighbours
Pray for the household by name. Pray for one neighbour, one absent friend, and one person you found difficult today. Ask plainly.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
1 Peter 5:7 · KJV“Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.”
Romans 12:14 · KJV“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.”
1 Timothy 2:1 · KJV
Step 5 · Scripture reading
A quiet passage before sleep
Read one of the following passages aloud. The Psalms are the household's night song; the Gospel is the household's peace. Let it be short.
Psalm 91 — “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91 · KJVPsalm 121 — “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”
Psalm 121 · KJVJohn 14:1–6 — “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.”
John 14:1–6 · KJV
Closing
A Trinitarian Amen
End as the household has ended evening prayer for two thousand years — in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
Numbers 6:24–26 · KJV“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.”
2 Corinthians 13:14 · KJV“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus… make you perfect in every good work to do his will. Amen.”
Hebrews 13:20–21 · KJV
