The Story Behind the Hymn

Psalm 63 was written when David was in the wilderness — sleeping rough, hunted, but somehow still singing. He tells us the songs came in the watches of the night, when he remembered God on his bed. This jazz-flavoured hymn keeps that late-hour intimacy: a household humming to itself in the dark that the Lord is very near.

When I remember thee upon my bed,

And meditate on thee in the night,

Thy songs are given to me at midnight,

And in the morning I wake to the light.

Reflection

Christian rest is not the absence of thought but the presence of God at the edge of thought. In the wakeful middle-of-the-night, when worry usually gets its innings, the psalmist keeps humming. The household that learns this psalm learns to hum too — quietly, into the pillow, until the songs of the Lord become louder than the noises we can't fix.

O Lord my God, be my song in the night. When I lie awake, meet me on my bed. When our household cannot sleep, sing thou over us. Under the shadow of thy wings, may we all rejoice until the light returns. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
