A rule of life

For most of Christian history, households have lived by a small rule of life — a simple, repeated set of practices that shapes the days. A rule is not a prison. It is a trellis. It holds the plant up so it can grow.

A workable rule for a modern household

Daily: Grace at meals. A short morning devotion. A short evening prayer. The Bible open once during the day, even for two minutes.

Weekly: Church on Sunday. One evening of family worship (see the Evening Family Worship guide). One meal with someone outside the family — a lonely person, a neighbour, a new friend.

Monthly: One act of tangible service. One extended prayer time. Confession — either privately, or (in traditions that keep it) with a pastor.

Yearly: The Christian year — Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Trinity. Each has its own meaning. The rhythm carries the household.

Every seven years: a family sabbatical of some kind — a week set aside to rest, remember, and reset.

Money

Tithe first (Malachi 3:10). Live within your means. Give generously to your church and to the poor. Do not go into debt for things that do not last. Talk about money openly with your children.

Speech

Guard your tongue. James 3 spends a whole chapter on this. Do not gossip. Do not run down other Christians in front of your children. Speak more slowly than you feel. 'Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath' (James 1:19).

Hospitality

Have people in. It does not have to be fancy. Bread, cheese, soup, and a real conversation is more Christian than any Instagram-perfect dinner party. Set an extra chair. Welcome the awkward. Feed the lonely.

Sabbath

One day a week — for most Christians, Sunday — set aside. Rest. Worship. Do not run errands. Do not check work email. Eat a good meal with the family. Read. Walk. Nap. The commandment to keep the sabbath (Exodus 20:8–11) is a mercy, not a burden.

The digital rule

No phones at the dinner table. No phones in the bedroom overnight. One evening a week screen-free. This alone will change your household in a year.

A short household prayer

"Father, teach us to number our days. Steady our small habits. Fill our house with your peace. Keep us in your way, day by day, all the days of our lives. Amen."
