What grace is

Grace is unearned kindness. It is the specific kind of love that gives freely to those who could not earn it and do not deserve it. The Christian Gospel is a Gospel of grace: not what we do for God, but what God has already done for us in Christ.

Why it matters

Every other religion has some form of ladder — do enough good things, keep enough rules, prove enough sincerity, and you may hope to reach God. Christianity is the news that no ladder is high enough, and that God has come down to us in Christ. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us" (Titus 3:5).

Grace and effort

This does not mean grace makes Christians lazy. Paul writes, "By the grace of God I am what I am… I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me" (1 Corinthians 15:10). Grace is the fuel of Christian life, not the excuse to sit down. We work from acceptance, not for it.

Grace and other people

Because we have received grace we cannot refuse to give it. When Jesus told the parable of the servant who was forgiven ten thousand talents but would not forgive his fellow servant a hundred pence, the lesson was fierce: what you have received freely, give freely. Households that have understood grace deal gently with each other's failures — because they have been dealt with gently.
