What we are saved from

The Bible teaches that all humans are separated from God because of sin — the things we do wrong, and the deeper problem of a heart that turns away from God even when we don't want to. Sin has consequences in this life and in eternity. Left to ourselves, we cannot bridge that gap. "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).

What we are saved to

Salvation is not just being rescued from something. It is being brought into something. Christians are saved into the family of God — adopted as sons and daughters, given the Holy Spirit, made citizens of a kingdom that will never end. The rest of the verse says: "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

How we are saved

Not by being good enough. Not by earning it. Not by religious ceremony. Salvation is a gift, purchased by Jesus on the cross and received by faith. Paul writes: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). We simply come to Jesus, trust him, receive what he has already done.

What happens next

The moment a person believes in Christ, they are justified — declared righteous before God, not because of anything in them, but because of Christ. Their sins are forgiven. The Holy Spirit comes to live in them. They are made new: "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Then a whole lifetime of walking with Christ begins.

How to receive it

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Turn from sin. Ask God to forgive you and receive you. Speak it out loud if you can. Then find a good church, be baptized, and begin to read the Bible. "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13).
