The Story Behind the Hymn

Psalm 46 is a battlefield psalm. The nations rage, the mountains shake, and in the middle of the noise God says the loudest single sentence in scripture: Be still, and know that I am God. This ambient-sacred hymn puts that command into a household voice — drone strings under a soft chorus, quiet enough to obey.

Be still, and know that I am God,

The Lord who made the sea and shore;

And that thy name is written evermore.

Though the mountains tremble in the sea,

Though the nations roar and rage;

The river of the city of our God

Is silent through every age.

Reflection

The Christian household needs the stillness command daily. Between the noise of the world and the noise of our own thoughts, God is asking us to be quiet long enough to notice who he is. He does not shout over the clatter. He waits for the household to be still.

A Prayer for a Still Household

O Lord, teach this household to be still and know that thou art God. Hush our clatter. Slow our anxious speed. Under thy Father's rod, let our small home learn the quiet. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
