Underneath Are the Everlasting Arms

“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” Deuteronomy 33:27 · KJV

The Story Behind the Hymn

Moses's final blessing over Israel names God as a refuge and then, in the same breath, promises that underneath the whole household are the everlasting arms. This minimalist-piano hymn keeps the promise close — one grand piano, one intimate voice, a small household lying down in the hands that have never dropped a child yet.

Scripture Anchor

“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” Deuteronomy 33:27 · KJV

Companion passages: Psalm 46:1 ("God is our refuge and strength") · Isaiah 40:11 ("He shall gather the lambs with his arm") · Isaiah 46:4 ("even to your old age I am he") · John 10:28 ("neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand").

The eternal God is thy refuge,
And underneath are the everlasting arms;
Whether thou art sleeping or waking,
They are there beneath the household's harms.
He shall thrust out the enemy before thee,
And say, Destroy them, be thou brave;
His arms have never dropped a child yet,
His arms have never let a saint to the grave.
Underneath, underneath,
The everlasting arms of the Lord;
Underneath, underneath,
The household is held by his own word.
So let this household lie down softly,
Trusting in the arms that never wear thin;
The Lord who carried Israel in the wilderness
Is carrying us until the morning comes in.
Underneath, underneath,
The everlasting arms of the Lord;
Underneath, underneath,
The household is held by his own word.

Reflection

The Christian household sleeps in a strange assurance: underneath the mattress, underneath the floor, underneath the earth we lay on, are arms that were there before the earth was made. Whatever we fall into tonight, we do not fall through those arms.

A Prayer for the Household in His Arms

Eternal God, be thou our refuge. Let this household lie down tonight in the certainty that underneath us are thine everlasting arms — the same arms that carried Israel in the wilderness, that have never dropped a child, never let a saint to the grave. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
