Christians believe Jesus is not just a great teacher, not just a good man, not just a prophet — but God himself, the second person of the Holy Trinity, who took on human flesh. John's Gospel begins: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."Jesus was born about 4 BC in Bethlehem in Judea, in the reign of the emperor Augustus. He grew up in the little Galilean town of Nazareth. Around AD 27 he began to preach — "The kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:15). He healed the sick. He raised the dead. He taught the crowds in parables and told the truth about God more clearly than anyone before or since.
He was crucified in Jerusalem in about AD 30 under Pontius Pilate. On the third day the tomb was empty. He appeared to hundreds of his disciples over forty days, then ascended to heaven. His followers — a small group of frightened Galilean fishermen and one converted rabbi — went out and turned the world upside down.
