The word
The English word gospel comes from an old word meaning good news. In Greek the word is euangelion — from which we get evangelist and evangelical. It is a message of great news that runs so fast the messenger cannot slow down.The story in four parts
1. Creation. God made the world good. He made men and women in his own image, to walk with him and to steward his world.2. The Fall. The first humans disobeyed God. Sin entered the world. Every human since has inherited that break: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God. Its wages are death.
3. The Cross and the Empty Tomb. God so loved the world that he sent his own Son. Jesus lived the sinless life we could not live. He died the death we deserved. "He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). On the third day he rose from the dead — the proof and the promise that death has been defeated.
4. The Return. Jesus will come again to judge the world in righteousness and to set everything right. Until then he gathers a Church of every tribe and tongue to live as his household on earth.
